Hot Chocolate Festival

We’re excited to be among 24 cafés, dessert and pastry shops participating in the Vancouver Hot Chocolate Festival.  The festival runs from January 17 to February 14th and we’re offering 2 flavours over the course of the festival.


We’re headed into the final week for our “Make Mine a Malt” flavour.  This flavour is made with Callebaut Milk Chocolate, malted milk and topped with whipped cream and a malt ball.  Each hot chocolate in the festival is served along with a small bite – with this one we chose to make a snack mix we’re calling “Sticks and Stones”: pecans, popcorn and pretzels with a caramel coating.

Starting January 31, you can try our “I Went All Hot and Cold” flavour which is a dark chocolate hot chocolate using Callebaut chocolate and Avalon Dairy whole milk.  This hot chocolate will be paired with Birchwood Dairy vanilla ice cream and a mini waffle cone.  Float it in the hot chocolate or eat it separately if you’d like!

The best thing about the Hot Chocolate Festival (yes, even better than 57 hot chocolate flavours) is that 5% of the gross sales from every hot chocolate benefits East Van Roasters and their training and employment program for women in the DTES.

Heading into the last half of December, we have a few holiday closures to announce.

We will be having our kids New Year’s Eve celebration this year.  Bring the kids to the shop starting at 8pm for fun and celebrations with a kids’ countdown at 9pm!

Heading into Fall

mr malty no2Remember the first day of school when you’d get all dressed up in your sweaters and corduroys, the new clothes you bugged your mom to get you because they were so “cool” only to have the first day of school be sweltering hot?  Well, it looks like that won’t be the case this week thanks to the rain in the forecast for this belated first week of school.  Where are those rain boots anyway?

Just in case you were wondering, Glenburn stays open through the Fall and Winter but for a few small breaks – this year we are going to take a little holiday in the greyest part of winter for us – November.

Thanksgiving Sunday – CLOSED

Hallowe’en – We’ll be closing after trick or treating ends – around 6pm

Closed for Holiday – November 1st – 14th – We’ll be closed for 2 weeks for a wee break and preparations for the Holiday Season

We’ve launched a new Specialty Sundae menu which includes some improved favourites and some new treats tested through our weekly Sundae Special program.

Added this time around:
The Banoffee Split – coffee and vanilla ice cream with butterscotch and hot fudge alongside a split banana with whipped cream and toffee bits.

The OMG Brownie – Brown Butter Brownie from The Last Crumb Bakery, caramel pecan fudge ice cream topped with peanut butter sauce, whipped cream and chocolate covered peanuts.

Breakfast for Dessert – vanilla ice cream, sliced bananas peanut butter sauce and cereal crunch topped with whipped cream and more crunch.


Ice Cream Sodas

You can also find some new drinks on the menu specifically Ice Cream Sodas.  Ice Cream Sodas are similar to a float but a little more jaunty!  Actually, they are hand mixed sodas topped with ice cream – sometimes other than vanilla – with a scoop of ice cream perched on the rim to mix as you go.  You control the creaminess and there are more than 20 flavours to choose from.

Three of our favourites are:

Boston Cooler – ginger soda with vanilla ice cream

Cherry Bomb – chocolate ice cream with cherry soda

Double Chocolate – chocolate ice cream with chocolate soda

Ice cream sodas are an authentic soda fountain drink – created by soda jerks in the late part of the 19th century and are a delicious tradition worth adopting.

Our summer hours are in effect! Expanded hours during the week and on weekends.

Monday – closed

Tuesday – 2pm – 9:30pm

Wednesday – 2pm – 9:30pm

Friday – 2pm – 10pm

Saturday – 1pm – 10pm*

Sunday – 2pm – 8pm

*Hats Off Day – Saturday, June 7th – 11am – 4:30pm

Holiday Monday hours are to be announced.  We may not be open all holiday Mondays

Dairy-Free Options

While we do have a number of dairy-full menu items including ice cream from Birchwood Dairy and milk from Avalon Dairy, we also do have treats for those who don’t do dairy.


Mixed Berry Sorbet from Rocky Point Ice Cream

We always have a dairy-free treat offering on our ice cream board.  Currently we’re scooping Mixed Berry Sorbet from Rocky Point Ice Cream.  Made with a mixture of local berries from Driediger Farms.  You can have it on a cone or cup – our cones are dairy-free too.  We also carry gluten-free cones if gluten bothers you.

You can top your sorbet with one of our non-dairy toppings too (see list below)!

Sodas are another item that works for a dairy-free diet.  We have over 20 flavours of hand-made sodas on offer.  Using syrups  made without high fructose corn syrup we mix them with soda water dispensed from our 1931 Walrus Soda Fountain.  This is how soda was made before bottled pop hit the scene and changed everything.

We offer some delicious syrups from local companies too!  Frostbites from Whistler makes delicious fruit cordials that feature some

interesting pairings of herbs and fruit – like tarragon and grapefruit or blueberry lavender.  Organic Fair from Cobble Hill makes a line of syrups that harken back to the apothecary roots of soda fountains, gingerale, rootbeer, cherry cola, orange and lavender lemon-balm are all available by the glass.  You can purchase syrups for home use too.

A dairy-free twist on a milkshake is called a Freeze and we can make it with any sorbet and any soda.  Our current sorbet would be delicious with a berry soda like strawberry or raspberry or made extra tangy with lemon soda.  We mix up the soda and the sorbet in our Hamilton Beach Milkshake Maker.  An icy smooth treat is the result and it’s delicious!  We don’t currently have the Freeze on the menu but just ask when you’re ordering, we can make one anytime.
